During this battle nightly bombing raids took place the city of Stalingrad was in some much in ablaze that it was becoming into rubble. Stalin had told the one who were defending the city to "Not one step backward." By early November the Germans controlled most of the city that was ruined. But once the Russian winter set in it caused the Germans to not be as dominate in Stalingrad. The Germans were not at all prepared for the the long cold winter. Which caused them to starve and cause a lot of deaths. So the on February 2, 1943 the Germans finally surrender to the Soviet Union. This is important to World War II since the Germans were getting pushed away from the Soviets.
